Funding and Funders
At present, there are a very
limited number of Chinese NGOs working on HIV/AIDS. Due to the difficulty
of registering and operating such a group in China, it is unlikely
that this will change very soon. At the same time, there is an increasing
amount of interest among international foundations and governments
in helping grass-roots NGOs address the epidemic.
There is also a growing number
of "GONGOs", or Government-run NGOs, working in the field. Some are effectively government
departments that have put on another hat, some are much more innovative
and creative in their approach to working "inside the system."
We will compile and maintain
a simple online directory of NGOs, government departments, and funding
bodies, as well as providing links and other information to groups
such as the China Development Brief (which has produced a much more detailed and excellent directory of NGOs in China).
We will especially work to
develop contacts among small, grass-roots groups and people living
with HIV/AIDS, and provide them with whatever assistance or training
is possible. In the future, we hope to be able to to introduce such
small-scale groups to potential funders, and vice-versa.
