According to the Xinhua News agency, 10 years ago in Jie Shou (located
in Fuyang of the Anhui Province), a peasant woman lost consciousness
due to blood loss in an abortion and was sent to the hospital to
be rescued. However, the hospital gave her transfused blood that
was contaminated by the AIDS virus. Consequently, the peasant woman
sued the hospital and demanded a compensation of 360,000 yuan. Recently,
courts decided that the defendant hospital compensate the peasant
woman by paying her medical treatment bills of 4928.10 yuan and
pay 50,000 yuan for the mental trauma she had to suffer.
In September of 1995, 33 year old Duan Mei (the real name is witheld)
fainted because of blood loss due to an abortion and was sent to
a hospital in Jieshou to be rescued. The hospital gave her a blood
transfusion. After Duan Mei left the hospital, she frequently experienced
fevers, headache dizziness, and cold sores. Many different treatments
were ineffective. In 2004, a disease prevention clinic in Anhui
province tested Duan Mei’s blood and diagnosed her with the AIDS
virus. This year alone, Duan Mei went to the same hospital that
gave her AIDS three times and was treated for a total of 100 days.
