The “HIV/AIDS Prevention and Treatment Regulations” announced by
Xinhua Net on Feb. 12 require that HIV/AIDS prevention knowledge
will be incorporated into university and high school curriculum.
The regulations require that at and above the county level, the
education departments should direct and urge universities, vocational
schools and middle schools to incorporate HIV/AIDS knowledge into
student’s curriculum and to develop relevant extracurricular activities.
According to materials published by the ministry of health, United
Nations Programme on AIDS, and WHO, currently China has detected
through testing 141,000 people infected with HIV, a difference of
51,000 people compared to the recent estimate of 65,000 people infected
as of 2005. This points out to the fact that the scope and depth
of HIV/AIDS public awareness education relative to the prevention
and treatment needs has large gaps to fill.
