Professor Gui Xi’en, a famous professor who has had contact with more than 1000
AIDS patients, publicly revealed the results of his HIV test yesterday.
It showed that he had not been infected, and fully demonstrates that daily
contact cannot transmit HIV.
The results of the test are private and confidential, but Gui
Xi’en revealed them to the public. “I have been tested three times, and
the results have all been normal,” Gui Xi’en said. He called for people
to eliminate their fear of AIDS, and to eliminate stigma against people
with HIV and AIDS.
Over the last five years, Gui Xi’en has gone to the high-prevalence
epidemic areas more than 10 times, performed medical consultations and
delivered medicines for patients. In order to show that daily contact does
not transmit HIV, in 2001 he invited 5 people with HIV/AIDS to his house
and lived with them for 5 days, eating together at one table and sharing
the bathroom as well. Gui Xi’en said that he had been in contact with over
1000 people with HIV/AIDS, one the Chinese doctors with the most such contact,
and that many people were scared that he would be infected with HIV.
In order to demonstrate that he was not infected, Gui Xi’en underwent
three HIV tests, two inside China and one in the United States. All were
normal.
