China releases new national AIDS report

BEIJING – The cumulative number of HIV infections until the end of 2003 was 840,000,
with a national infection rate of 0.07%. As of September 2004, the cumulative
number of reported cases of HIV/AIDS was 89,067, with 20,786 of those being
AIDS cases. The report indicates that HIV is being transmitted from high
risk groups to the general population. New evidence indicates that in recent
years the percentage of those infected via sexual transmission has been
increasing, with the rise among women being proportionally higher than
among men.
Epidemic reporting from around the country
The epidemic has now reached all 31 provinces autonomous regions,
and municipalities, with coastal regions and large cities making up the
majority of cases.
As of 29 November, Shaanxi province had discovered 274 cumulative
reported cases of HIV infection, among which 100 were AIDS cases. 46 had
already died.
As of 22 November, Zhejiang province had discovered 811 cumulative
reported cases of HIV infection, among which were 125 AIDS cases. 69 had
already died.
As of 21 November, Tianjin City had discovered cumulative reported
128 cases of HIV infection.
As of 31 October, Guangdong province had discovered 7044 cumulative
reported cases of HIV infection, among which were 281 AIDS cases. The reported
number of HIV infections is #5 in the nation.
As of 25 November, Shanghai Municipality had discovered 1124 cumulative
reported cases of HIV infection.
As of today, Guangxi province had discovered 10,758 cumulative reported
cases of HIV infection.
As of 28 November, Gansu province had discovered 147 cumulative reported
cases of HIV infection.
At present, Heilongjiang province has discovered 110 cumulative reported
cases of HIV infection.
As of 30 September, Xinjiang [Uyghur Autonomous Region] had discovered
9300 cumulative reported cases of HIV infection, among which were 1300
women.
