On 20 August the State Chinese Medicine Management Bureau confirmed that China
will provide free treatment to 30,000 AIDS patients in 15 provinces and
districts. The first outlay will be 9 million RMB, and will begin treatment
for 2,300 patients in Hebei, Anhui, Henan, Hubei, and Guangdong provinces.
In March of this year, [traditional] Chinese medicine [TCM] was
included in the national plan for AIDS prevention and control, and it was
decided to spend 29 million RMB over three years to create a base for TCM
treatment of AIDS in some counties and districts of the above five provinces,
and to provide free treatment for patients.
At present, the Ministry of Health, State Bureau of Chinese Medicine
Management are conducting a “Five province TCM AIDS treatment training
session” in order to raise the clinical and technical ability of TCM doctors
to treat AIDS.
State Bureau of Chinese Medicine Management has organized an expert
group and issued a “Five province TCM AIDS treatment clinical treatment
technical guide” and has chosen a set of safe and effective TCM clinical
treatment [drug] combinations.
It was revealed that TCM treatment would be made on the basis
of symptoms, and patients will be separated into three stages and 13 conditions.
Drugs for the treatment will be given in two preparations.
Experts say that experience using TCM to control AIDS in recent
years has already formed a solid foudation. The actualization will show
that TCM has clear benefits in strengthening AIDS patients’ immune response,
improving symptoms, stabilizing and controlling the illness, and improving
the quality of life. It [TCM] has few side-effects and a low price.
