NANJING, Nov. 28 (Xinhuanet) -- HIV carriers have been spotted in 13 cities in east China's Jiangsu province with the number of new HIV carriers reported in the province during the first three quarters of the year amounting to 119, including 34 AIDS patients, said a release issued by the provincial health department on Friday.

Jiangsu reported the first HIV carrier in 1991 and the first AIDS patient in 1999.

As of Sept. 30, 2003, the province had reported 392 HIV carriers, including 63 AIDS patients, 33 of whom had died of the disease, according to the release.

Some 66.84 percent of the total HIV carriers were infected through intravenous drug use and other blood transmission, 21.68 percent through sexual transmission, 1.02 percent through mother-baby transmission, and the remaining 10.46 percent through means still unclear, said the release.

The 39.03 percent of the HIV carriers are aged between 20 and 29 and 30.87 percent are between 30 and 39 years old. Enditem
